The concept of Ally or Adversary defines a critical distinction in Right-Minded Teamwork (RMT): you are either actively working toward shared team goals (Ally) or elevating yourself at the team’s expense (Adversary).
There is no middle ground.
This is a fundamental choice within the RMT philosophy. Allies work toward achieving team goals, focusing on Oneness and collaboration. Adversaries work toward individual elevation, which ultimately creates separatenessOneness is a psychological state of mind. It can be described in many ways using phrases such do no harm, and work as one. Separateness is its opposite. More and divides the team.
The Choice: Reason vs. Ego
Every teammate is faced with this daily choice, determined by which thought system they follow:
- As an Ally, you follow Reason: Reason gently reminds you that separateness prevents true success. The defining mindset for an ally is: Do I want our team to be successful? Allies choose collaboration and are committed to mutual success.
- As an Adversary, you follow Ego: Ego persuades you to compete with your teammates. The defining mindset for an adversary is: Do I want to be right, no matter the cost? Adversaries choose competition, creating a Battleground inside themselves and the team.
As the Decision-MakerThe Right Choice Model uses the term “Decision-Maker” to describe the part of you that chooses to listen to Ego or Reason. More, The Real You, you must choose to follow either Reason (Ally) or Ego (Adversary). This decision dictates whether you collaborate or compete.
Transforming the Adversary
The choice to become an Ally is demonstrated by action: Allies embrace and live their team’s Work Agreements. Conversely, the choice to follow Ego turns the teammate into an adversary who undermines the team culture.
To transform competitive adversaries into collaborative allies, RMT advocates a process of shifting the teammate’s perspective back to Reason. This involves applying tools that encourage a mindset change, such as:
- Following the Right Choice Model
- Creating and enforcing team Work Agreements
- Applying the 7 Mindfulness Training Lessons
By utilizing the RMT process, teammates choose to become allies, actively moving away from competition and toward the realization that none of us is as smart as all of us.
