12 Steps for Designing team building workshop

👉 Start designing a “real-work” workshop. It’s the better way!

Too often, well-meaning people think that playing team games will help, but they are only pretend solutions. High-performance teamwork isn’t built through socials or outdoor exercises; it is built through a well-planned team process that addresses the team’s current, real-world issues.

If you spend just one minute reviewing the 12-step model below, it will be self-evident that this process will guide you in designing a practical, fit-for-purpose workshop.

Teammates genuinely want to attend these sessions because they know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the team will get real and valuable work done.

Listen: 2:28 Minute Explanation.

What Makes This Practical?

The main reason this process works is that it is a thorough, realistic, and “fit-for-purpose” method that produces tangible results. Let me point out two specific elements that will help you uplift marginal performance in the team-building workshop:

Step 3: Addressing the Root Cause

  • Unlike games that ignore causes by only addressing symptoms, Step 3 guides you to look past surface-level bickering to find the true team need. This is the “Science” of strategic team building.

The Teammate Punch List

  • During the “Contract” phase (Steps 1-9), you will conduct 1-on-1 interviews with every teammate.
  • These insights are distilled into a Punch List—a powerful report format that reflects what the team thinks and knows it needs.
  • This method is far superior to standard data reporting because it points directly to the issues the team needs to address to reach shared accountability and operational effectiveness.

Do these two steps well, and your teammates walk into the room knowing they aren’t being “subjected” to a program; they are participating in a custom design session they helped create!

The 12-Step Roadmap to Oneness

This method guides you through the three vital phases of workshop design:

  • Phase 1: Contract (Steps 1–9): The design phase. You will learn how to uncover root causes, interview teammates, and finalize a “fit-for-purpose” agenda that naturally creates buy-in before the workshop even begins.
  • Phase 2: Commence (Step 10): You will guide the workshop with confidence, leading by example through “Reason-led” facilitation.
  • Phase 3: Carry On (Steps 11–12): Maintaining momentum. Ensure the transformation lasts by tracking progress and repeating the 12-step cycle every three months for sustained growth.

It was about 28 years ago when we first met [Phillip & Dan]. The facilitation and teamwork fundamentals that you taught back then are still the way I conduct meetings and interact with others…with great success. It’s amazing how well-founded and effective your guidance and coaching was and how much it has helped me in trying to be a good leader. Phillip Myint, Managing Principal at EDG, Inc.

The author’s passion and skill for facilitation and developing teams is evident and this book provides tools and examples to channel his experience so it may be applied by readers. The style of writing is to-the-point and provides good information without holding back.
The book focuses on how to help teams identify weaknesses and work better together by following a process the author has developed based upon his experience. What’s great about the book is that in addition to the process outlined, the author provides supplemental resources and links to additional information to help you out. In the book, he consistently advocates a team approach for working and after reading it, you see that he practices what he writes and truly wants you to be a better team leader. Lauren Bailey, 2013
