“Mindedness” in the Right-Minded Teamwork (RMT) framework refers to the mental state, perceptions, and conscious choices an individual demonstrates. This concept is the core of the RMT psychological approach to team building.
Defining the Two States
The human mind is understood to be split between two fundamental thought systems:
- Right-Mindedness: This is the positive mental state achieved when you choose to follow Reason’s guidance. It induces accurate perception and is characterized by attitudes and actions that are ally-focused, collaborative, and accountable. RMT teaches that Right-Mindedness is the necessary correction for Wrong-Mindedness.
The term “right-mindedness” is properly used as the correction for “wrong-mindedness,” and applies to the state of mind that induces accurate perception. (ACIM, T-3.IV.4:3)
- Wrong-Mindedness: This is the negative mental state that occurs when you choose to follow your Ego’s advice. It leads to inaccurate perception, conflict, and wrong-minded behaviors like victimization and blame.
The Journey of Mindfulness
To transition from the negative state of Wrong-Mindedness back to the positive state of Right-Mindedness, RMT encourages the practice of Mindfulness (or Right-Mindedness). This is viewed as a “journey without distance to a goal you want to achieve”—meaning the solution is always internal and immediately available through conscious choice.
Since it is impossible to sustain collaborative teamwork with a split mind (frequently switching between Reason and Ego), teammates must consistently apply tools like the:
- 7 Mindfulness Training Lessons: Used to train the mind to choose peace over conflict.
- Right Choice Model: Used to ensure behaviors are accountable and ally-focused, guiding the team back into the forgiving Unified Circle of Right-Minded Thinking.
Choosing Right-Mindedness is the only way to resolve conflict with real effect, leading to the positive team characteristics of acceptance, forgiveness, and adjustment.
