Oneness vs. Separateness: The RMT Philosophy ☯️

By Dan Hogan ・ 3 minutes to read

Oneness is the psychological state of mind and the aspirational philosophy at the heart of Right-Minded Teamwork (RMT).

It represents the team’s pre-separation state, where all minds are seen as equal and united in shared interest. Separateness is the opposite, fueled by the Ego: The Wrong Mind.

The RMT Myth, a short tale involving Reason, Ego, and the Decision-Maker, illustrates this core philosophical struggle. The myth advocates that teammates must follow Reason’s path to Oneness and shared interest, rejecting Ego’s disastrous advice to seek Separateness and prioritize selfishness.

Reason, Ego and Decision-Maker. Right-Minded Teamwork

The Tiny, Mad Idea of Separation

The RMT Myth reveals that Separateness originated with Ego’s “tiny, mad idea” of wanting more, which led to the birth of separation itself. This idea is the source of all conflict in teams.

  • Separateness leads to attitudes like attack and blame, resulting in resentment and placing the team in the Battleground environment.
  • Oneness leads to attitudes like forgiveness and mutual admiration, allowing teammates to rise above conflict and find solutions within the Classroom.

To become a Right-Minded teammate is simple. You must choose attitudes and behaviors that create and extend Oneness, not project Separateness.

The Unified Circle of Right-Minded Thinking

Reason is always ready to lead the team back into Oneness, joyfully described as the Unified Circle of Right-Minded Thinking. This circle is the collective mind where all team issues are successfully resolved through consistent Adjustment, Forgiveness, and Acceptance.

When the team achieves this state, they declare their interdependence, creating their collective Moment of Reason and embracing the foundational RMT philosophy: Do No Harm. Work as One.

Teammates in the Unified Circle know that their mistakes are only mistakes—to be corrected, not punished.

The Return to Truth

The process of returning to Oneness requires the Decision-Maker to choose to train their mind. This is achieved through the RMT process, which includes the Right Choice Model, Mindfulness Training Lessons, and Work Agreements.

The ultimate goal is to reach a point where Right-Minded attitudes and behaviors become second nature, and the team operates with the mindful truth that all minds are created equal. As the philosophical note from Reason states,

“To simply say these words means nothing. You must live these words. Then, they will mean everything.”

Action

For a list of 30 examples of Oneness, see the Right-Minded Teamwork Attitudes & Behaviors list found in numerous RMT books.

Reason, Ego & the Right-Minded Teamwork Myth - Philosophy and Process

The concepts and story behind Oneness and separateness are introduced in RMT’s book, Reason, Ego & the Right-Minded Teamwork Myth: The Philosophy and Process for Creating a Right-Minded Team That Works Together as One.

In this book, you will learn about Ego’s “tiny, mad idea” of wanting more “stuff” and how Ego’s choices led us all into a world of separation. That tiny, mad moment was, literally, the birth of separation.

But, as the Myth reveals, Reason is always ready to lead us back into Oneness – our pre-separation state – joyfully described as the Unified Circle of Right-Minded Thinking where we can do no harm and work as one.
