9 Right Choices

By Dan Hogan ・ 3 minutes to read

Right-Minded Teamwork ® (RMT) is achieved when team leaders and teammates consistently choose to integrate the essence of the nine Right-Minded choices into their work.

These choices are self-evident, self-validating, and universal best practices that address the root of team dysfunction and promote collaboration and team effectiveness. They guide you to shift from Ego-driven thinking toward Reason and a unified, Right-Minded approach to achieve the goal to Do No Harm, Work as One®.

📝 Overview: Right-Minded Teamwork’s 9 Right Choices

The nine choices serve as catalysts for team discussions and the creation of Work Agreements.

  1. Choose Reason: All teammates agree to take responsibility for creating and following their custom version of Right-Minded Teamwork.
  2. Behave as One: Making a wholehearted commitment to OnenessOneness is a psychological state of mind. It can be described in many ways using phrases such do no harm, and work as one. Separateness is its opposite. More is the crucial first step.
  3. Right-Minded Communication: An End to SeparatenessOneness is a psychological state of mind. It can be described in many ways using phrases such do no harm, and work as one. Separateness is its opposite. More: Communication is effective and kind, flowing naturally when teammates live the first two choices.
  4. Meaningful Vision: Make Your Dream Come True: The team’s vision provides the context for making Right-Minded, team-oriented choices.
  5. Work Agreements: Bring People Together as One: Work Agreements establish an environment where teammates forgive past mistakes, opening them up to greater future.
  6. Critical Few: Complete Important Tasks FirstWhen a team is stuck in the "full-plate syndrome," it is best to complete the important tasks first. More: Right-Minded teammates spend their time doing the right things right instead of chasing busyness.
  7. Mistakes Happen: Correct Them; Don’t Punish People: Teammates correct mistakes because they know that doing so is a sensible way to learn, free from fear or blame.
  8. Conflict Happens: Go to the Classroom, Not the Battleground: When team conflict occurs, teammates rise above the battleground to make constructive solutions.
  9. Recognition: Make It Easy to Keep Going: Giving and receiving authentic recognition feeds team spirit and fuels the continuous improvement process.

🛠️ How to Apply the Choices

There is no single right way, but the application is always about the dialogue. The application will include a healthy, functional, and empowering dialogue that moves your teammates toward unified action.

  • Self-Study & Survey: Ask all teammates to read the book and complete the survey. Discuss the results and identify the choices you wish to apply.
  • Focused Discussion: Discuss the first two choices in a team meeting and agree on the new attitudes and behaviors to live by.
  • Workshop Approach: Follow Right-Minded Teamwork’s 12-step process to design a thorough RMT-style team-building workshop.
