Description

This workshop agenda and process will help you successfully onboard a new team leader who

  • is unknown to teammates or who
  • was a peer and is now the leader.

Overview

This process is a better, faster, and cheaper way for the new team leader to take their new role in the team. This process typically culminates into a 1-day workshop.

productive right-minded teammatesThe Process

It is always helpful for a new leader to consider his or her norms, expectations, and preferred ways of operating, before the first business team meeting.

It is equally as important for teammates to prepare for welcoming their new leader.

Therefore, this Agenda and Process asks both the teammates and the leader to ask themselves important questions before the first business meeting.

Preparation Questions

There are many good questions in the downloadable materials for both teammates and the leader. Here are a few of each.

Team Leader

  1. What are the top 3 performance expectations you have for teammates? What are your performance expectations for yourself?
  2. How would you describe your leadership/management style? What works/does not work relative to interacting with your leadership/management style?
  3. If a teammate thinks you are about to make a mistake, what is the best way for them to respond or call it to your attention?
  4. What is the best way for teammates to express disagreement or alternative opinions?

  1. What do you consider to be the three biggest challenges the team faces?
  2. What is an ideal team leader for you? What don’t you like in a team leader?
  3. How do you like to be communicated with (face-to-face, by memo)? How do you like to receive recognition/reprimands? Bad news?
  4. What concerns do/did you have about the formation of this new team?

This is an excellent tool. We used it when we brought in a new department manager. The tool gave us a structured process for the transition. It gave the staff a way to communicate their questions and concerns and it gave the new manager a way to communicate her expectations. And it gave everyone a way to share their communication styles. I’m so glad we used it. I recommend it and definitely will use it again.

      Thank you, Tom!
Good advice for all to see. And I’m glad the process worked well with your department manager.
      Dan
